Pros Know Their SOPs

Over the past year, security guards have made headlines because of what it looked like they were NOT doing. For example, videos showing robberies in progress while the security guard videotaped.

What most people don’t know, is that those guards may have been doing the right thing. The right thing is following the SOPs, or Standard Operating Procedures. Security professionals across the nation have SOPs that they must follow. In many cases, that means not interfering with certain types of crimes while they are in progress.

This brings me back to a subject I talked about throughout my book Rent-A-Cop Reboot - the above picture is from page 17 - and in several past blog posts: training.

Security guards who are well trained know the SOPs of the company or agency they work for, as well as those for the location where they are on duty. They aren’t always the same. Violations of procedures may be quickly caught, and guards can pay the price with everything from a negative personnel report to losing their job. Possibly even getting them injured or killed.

But good training serves guards well, and they must keep training throughout their careers.

Are you interested in getting into, or going further in, the security field? You must be prepared to train in ways that include SOPs. Physical and tactical training are not enough. In many cases, a tough mind and clever mouth can better secure a situation than solid muscle or a drawn weapon.

Well trained guards spend time studying procedures and doing everything they can to keep their minds sharp. They also develop ways to keep their emotions in check while doing their duty.

Sure, it seems like almost everyone has a camera and an opinion these days. If you think you’ve got what it takes to be a security professional, don’t worry about that. Let your training, courage, and experience show. Let your dedication to helping others shine through.

Everyone knows a pro when they see one. Make sure they see one when they look at you.
